During the Middle Ages, each of these cities had its own port on the coast, which led to the development of fishing villages around them. Stone houses were built in a very specific way, and the construction characteristics that stand out are the vaults and small courtyards that are enclosed with the high stone walls. Under the Frankopan rule, the free citizens in towns of the Vinodol area together they had written the Vinodol Code, the first Croatian legal document. It was in 1288, at a time when many parts of Europe were still considered to be barbaric. Many skilled and experienced fishermen have marked the 20th century in the Crikvenica areas but they have soon found tourism as their main, primary activity. A new era of social and economic prosperity has begun in 1993 with the founding of the City of Crikvenica as a part of the local government unit in the independent Republic of Croatia.
Before the City of Crikvenica had become settled, people have lived in the hinterland, around Kotor on a nearby hill. Parish of Kotor was once part of a small medieval town called Grižana. Local people were engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, farming and fishing, and they learned about wine making from the Roman people who had lived here.
People from Crikvenica were widely known as skilled stonemasons and bricklayers. At the end of the 19th century, Crikvenica was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The most famous beach in Crikvenica is a public beach. This beach has many qualities, the sea is crystal clear, and it is precisely the reason why this beach carries a Blue Flag since 1998. It is located just 200 meters from the city centre, and is optimized for all ages. It is inevitable meeting place for the young people. Its uniqueness and diversity, when compared to the other beaches is that it is available for persons with disabilities, which means that the beach includes a ramp for entering the water and specially adapted sanitary facilities.
Admission to the beach is charged from 8.00 – 17.00, and then it becomes a promenade and an amusement park for children. Above the beach you can find pleasant shade under the Mediterranean vegetation which is ideal to escape from the strong sunlight. If you get a desire for cold drinks you will not have to go far from the beach, because there are three tourist facilities that offer light meals, sandwiches and refreshments.

The Black Molo Beach
This beach is part of the main beach and is known for its shallow bay. Because of the shallowness, most of visiting people are persons with children and lovers of famous water sport - picigin.
The Balustrada Beach
It’s a pebble beach that stretches from the public city beach in the centre of Crikvenica. This beach also proudly carries the Blue Flag, which to the swimmers represents a certain security and enables a peace of mind. Within it there is a playground, and in addition offers the possibility to rent deck chairs, sunshades and pedal boats.
The Castle Beach
The Castle Beach is the pebble one, and is located in front of the Hotel Kaštel in the centre of the town after which it was named (kaštel = castle or fort) Here you can rent deck chairs and umbrellas or have a lunch in a nearby restaurant ‘Stella Maris’.
The Ka?jak Beach
The Ka?jak Beach is also long pebble beach in the homonymous tourist village. It is located in a quiet bay surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. It offers the possibility to rent deck chairs and sunshades. Refreshment from the heat can be found in a bar on the beach.
The Podvorska Beach
If you have a pet, and you do not know what to do with him while enjoying in the beauty of Crikvenica beaches, there is a solution to that problem. Namely, to the delight of all animal lovers, in July of 2010 Crikvenica has got its first pet’s beach. It is located next to the harbour Podvorska on top of the pier, and the entrance is free.
At the entrance to the beach there is a notice board that contains rules that owners of pets (mostly dogs) must take into consideration. In 2011 a special canopies were placed to offer the protection to your pet from direct sunlight. In 2013, Podvorska beach was named the best beach for dogs in the Adriatic.
